For much of his working life, Carter Matthews did what people are encouraged to do. He learned new skills, gained qualifications, changed industries, took on increasing responsibility, worked in different countries, started a business and adapted whenever circumstances changed. He became good at figuring things out. Finance led to technology. Technology led to systems and business management. Business created experience in compliance, operations, people and risk. Later came web development, digital business and writing. Each new experience added another tool to an already growing collection. It should have made him highly employable. Instead, when he eventually returned to the employment market, he discovered something he had never expected. After hundreds of applications, only three interviews and no job offers, he began to question an assumption that had shaped his working life: that more experience, more skills and greater adaptability would naturally make someone more valuable to an employer.
